A dream is a thought or aim that everybody strives in order
to achieve when older.
It inspires, aspires, creates, aims, motivates and prepares
you for the future.
My dream has not been achieved yet but I will certainly
attempt to fulfill it.
It all started back in year five on a hot blazing day of
early summer when I was still a small little boy in shorts
with no aim whatsoever for the future.
My class was starting a new subject on different famous
Australians through time. The teacher decided to show us a
video to give the whole class a hint, to show what we were
learning.
The preview of the video screened all the faces of different
famous Australian that would be in the tape. Out of all the
faces there were two that I went on to admire. They were
Fred Hollows and Dr. Victor Chan. Both of them had one thing
in common- helping people with different health problems.
From that day on I said to myself that I would like to be
somebody useful to the community in saving and helping
lives. I want to become a doctor and that is my dream.
In order to know what I was against to have a seat in the
medical world, I went and discovered what I needed to do in
order to become a doctor.
The first person I turned to was my uncle who was already a
doctor so I could ask a few questions.
“ What do I need to do while I’m still in school to become a
doctor?”
He answered in a deep, warm voice, “Well, you need to study
really, really hard.”
From that day on, I took my uncle’s advice and studied to
the best of my abilities, until…
During year 6 I had tried my best and applied myself to all
different subjects without making any faults. At the end of
year 6 the award presentations were going to take place.
The day before the award presentations, I spoke to my friend
Steven and asked who he thought would get the Dux award. He
replied,” Hopefully I will.” I thought to myself, how could
there be breathing space or hope me being named Dux.
When I went home my parents me that a letter had been sent
home saying that I would be receiving an award at the
presentations. I was overjoyed and I thought that there was
some hope that I would receive the Dux award.
The next day everybody was getting ready for the
presentations. All their parents who had come to see their
child receive an award were seated.
The awards were given in order from Kindergarten advancing
to year 6.
It was a moderate day with cool breezes blowing
occasionally. I sat there, in my seat gazing at the little
children coming up to shake the Principal’s hand.
Eventually, it was year four and my sister came to receive
her award. I looked to the parent’s seats and saw my mum and
dad sitting there talking to the other parents.
As time passed, year 4 finished and moved onto year 5. Then
it was year 6. First, all the classes came out and gave
their best students the awards. Next, it was the sport
awards. When my class teacher went up, my name wasn’t
announced so I was confused whether the letter was correct
or not.
I sat there thinking, I couldn’t have received the Dux award
but the class awards had all been handed out. I couldn’t
have got the chess and sport awards so what else could be
left?
After the students from my class received their awards, one
them who was my friend said, ”I have a feeling that you’ll
be getting the Dux.”
I answered with a soft voice, “I hope so.”
After all the class and sport certificates and medallions
were handed out, it was the ‘Student of the year’ award.
This award was for the student who had represented the
school in different areas the most. I knew it wasn’t me
because I rarely represented the school in anything.
Therefore, the award went to Nicole Pigades- a boastful girl
I my class.
Also, her name would be on the emblem of records for each
year, which hung proudly in the office.
Next, the Principal held up the Dux award and spoke clearly,
“This year has been a very tough year, teachers have been
marking their students more carefully. This is due to the
quality of students we produce each year. The Dux award is
one of the most important awards ever, it is for students
who have performed exceptionally well in their academic
areas. However, this year’s margins of top and second were
very close. The winner won by a very close score.”
“ The Dux for this year is…”
I was nervous. My heart rate tripled, cold sweat ran down my
face. I couldn’t look.
“Hubert Huynh”
I was dumbstruck. I was astonished, amazed and excited. It
was me, it was actually me!
I sat there and thought. Am I dreaming? Did I hear the right
name? Was it really me?
I took a quick glance to my teacher and she gave a signal to
walk up to the Principal.
I stood up. Everybody looked. I took my first pace, then my
second and so on, I let out a small grin of nervousness and
shook the old, worn out hand of the Principal.
He gave me a pat and handed over my huge golden medallion
protected in a leather case. The Principal congratulated me
with his words of wisdom-“Well done” and turned to the crowd
speaking.
“This is our fine young man Hubert who has received this
year’s Dux award. His name will be embedded on the Dux
shield that is hanging proudly in the front office. He also
receives a list of prizes for his future high school years.
The crowd clapped rapidly turning the once peaceful shelter
into a mixture of sounds. I walked down to my seat a thought
“I am Dux of the school”.
When I returned home I was very proud of myself. I had
studied very hard during Primary half accomplishing my dream
of becoming a doctor.
But for the time being I” still on my way towards
accomplishing the second half… time will tell. |
