My Dream
A Writing Competition For High School Students
in the Fairfield Area, Sydney, Australia

James Yankaiya - Consolation Prize

In life people have dreams and goals they want to achieve. Many teenagers and young adults have dreams they want to achieve during high school.  For examples, getting good marks in HSC have a good reputation among school friends and teachers, etc. These dreams can change as we discover new and better things and slowly forget about the past. In this essay, I will talk to you about my dreams and goals in life, some of these ambitions are in the areas sport, school and work.

In school I would like to maintain a good name for myself academically and have a good reputation. I always try to do my best in every subject and it doesn’t matter if I am not good at it because there is always room for improvement. I study very hard for tests and try to get a top score in my class. Maths is my favourite subject and I am always looking to score a good mark in every test. I like English because I like to read books and do drama. I also like practical science, especially when we do experiments using different equipments. School can be hard at times, like doing assignments or having a bundle of homework to do over the weekend. My mum always tells me that in life nothing comes easy. You have to work hard and that hard work will get you a better result. This has been a great advice for me, as I started high school. Now, I aim for best result in every subjects even those that are not my favourite. I would also like to achieve a HSC mark 90% or more. With these good marks I will then have a better chance of getting in the job or University that I like. One day I would like to become a computer engineer or a computer programmer. I would like to do be a good student in High School because it will help me to be a better person later in the years.  If I have a good reputation coming out of school than maybe I will have a good reputation going into University. If I do well in all my examinations through high school, I can look at all my success for those years and build more confidence in myself.  I would like to go to Sydney University or University of Technology.

Just like school, I love my sport.  One particular sport that I love to play the most is cricket.  I have been playing cricket for my local club, Wetherill Park Cricket club for the past four years. I was introduced to this game five or six years ago and loved it ever since. My favourite international teams are Australia and India. I like these two teams because I am of Indian origin and was born in Australia. My two favourite players are Glenn McGrath, a world class bowler from the Australian squad and Sachin Tendulkar, the world’s number one batsman from the Indian squad. I try to play when I finish my homework or in my spare time. Now that I am in high school, I always seem to have assignments or homework to do and can’t find time to do the things I enjoy, like sport. During the weekends, I practice batting and bowling with my dad in our back yard. One day I hope to play for Australia as a bowler and beat Courtney Walsh’s current record of over 500 wickets in test match cricket.  Becoming a top bowler requires hard work and lots of practice.  To get into the Australian squad I will have to practice much harder to be perfect.  I always like playing cricket because I love the game especially when I am bowling.  I love the feeling when I bowl somebody out and the crowd start roaring.  I also want to play to keep my body fit and healthy.  If you are successful in that sport you can obtain a good reputation for yourself.  Teachers and people will recognise you because they like to watch sport.  If you are really good, you could get your name published in the local paper and your name could spread through the community. I think school is important but so is sport.

Another one of my dreams is to become a computer software engineer like Bill Gates. I would love to make my own softwares and become a multi billion dollar corporation. Then, I could hire and employ people to make the upgrade versions of the original, while I look after the financial side of the company. It sounds all easy in words but I know it is a very hard job looking after a company. You have to pay tax, employees, equipment, and the list goes on. Owning your own company can cause a lot stress and frustration, but I think if I am determined I will manage. I really want to do this job when I grow up  because it has been my life long dream. I love computer programming and this means I get paid for doing something I love.  My dad always tells me to do something you love and don’t take a job just for the money. He tells me that this job will be hard to get because many people want to get in the computer industry and by the time I grow up many people will have taken this type of job.  I still will do my best to get this job.

When I achieve everything and start earning good money, I would love to help my parents, both financially and in any other way possible.  They are helping, encouraging and advising me all the time. They support me with my education a great deal.  This will pay them back for all their time and effort. I would like to buy myself a house and a car. Finally , I will find a nice girl,  get married and have few kids.  I hope that one day these dreams of mine will turn it into reality.
