My Dream
A Writing Competition For High School Students
in the Fairfield Area, Sydney, Australia

Margaret Ostapczuk - Consolation Prize

I have a dream, a dream where I am building Australia into a strong community. In my dream I am a lawyer, prosecuting criminals for their offences. I feel very strongly about my goal, as my values and believes are strong. It is very important for members of Australian community to realise that their safety lays in their own hands, and that by co operating with each other and police we can get rid off criminals. It isn't good that we fear criminals, gangs and recedefists but neither these criminals nor ourselves belive in police and our Legal System. Many accused go free because victims withdraw cases out of fear. Without these victims as witnesses there is no case. There is no justice being done. I wish to serve Australian community as a lawyer protecting victims of crime and their families. I wish to run meetings in different communities to help them understand legal system and to co operate without fear from criminals. I do agree that if there is only one person reporting on crimes they may end up dead by the gang. Yet I wish, and I strongly believe that together we can make a difference. Together we can reduce crime and protect our children, the future of this country. I feel that by becoming a lawyer I can make this dream come true. This career will provide me with the authority, power and money to run propaganda to fight crime.

I understand that people come from different backgrounds, some can hardly speak any English, not talking about knowing their rights or understanding our Legal system. In some countries run by military forces people fear the police as they see their family members being killed. After coming to Australia, they prefer to stay out of trouble disbelieving that our Democratic system can do a good job in protecting people. I believe different. Of course there are lawyers and policemen who do their job for money. I believe, I can change it and stop the stereotyping. I feel that if people can see the good job done by the police, and justice being done they will be more eager to help. Australian community should be heard louder, by understanding our legal system they will know how to fight for it. I believe that everyone should have their say, and that we should take advantage of being multicultural society as by using best methods from other countries and learning from them through their people in Australia we can build the most effective legal system. My dream of being a lawyer will help me to fight for justice and safety of all Australians.

Why, one may ask, would and 18 year old want to dedicate their whole life in shaping Australia and fighting for justice? Its because I enjoy studying Legal Studies, and I have many creative ideas to build strong, legally informed community who will fight for their own rights. I believe that Australia is a beautiful country and Australian people of all backgrounds have their values and are beautiful on the inside. I believe that Australian community deserves safety, deserves freedom, deserves peace. We come to Australia to protect our families from the wars of our countries. We come here to build better future for ourselves and our children. Yet the growing crime and people fearing to speak up and to prosecute this criminals makes it harder with every coming year for those in the legal system as well as for our children to fight for their peace. Usually this behaviour means that children to feel safe join gangs as they lack the understanding that safety only comes from the legal system and through legal measures.

Next year my dream would start coming true. Next year I will start university in Bachelor of Law at University of Sydney. However this year, after my HSC finishes I would like to start working for the community and introduce my first dream "The Festival Of Law", where members of cummunity will be able to talk to lawyers and police officers building good relationships. Also to show drama shows where people could perform in different situations and how would they react, of course with sense of humour.Modern music should be played as to encourage more youth to come and join in. Also free movies about police would be shown such as 'police academy', with theme that good wins with evil. As well as multimedia presentation about work of police, what they deal with and how is it related to our laws. To make my first step I would need people who would help me organise it. But I believe that anything is possible and that I can start building strong community now, with help of others and when I become a lawyer to continue my job in educating and encouraging the believe in our Legal System.
