My Dream
A Writing Competition For High School Students
in the Fairfield Area, Sydney, Australia

I wish to travel the world and see our world at its best, and I want to uncover and share its hidden beauty by capturing a moment in time. I have always admired beautiful things, and had a great appreciation for elegant and attractive scenery. I dream of finding fulfilment in my work, by inspiring others to respect, and care for our environment.

I think searching for beauty in our environment would make me appreciate the world more. I was inspired to have this desire when I stood near the edge of a cliff, with jagged rocks below and waves crashing and foaming between them. The cool wind whipped my hair back, and I stood in veneration at wide, sparkling blue water. I stared at the scene, and could not think. I was entranced. It was awesome, and frightening because I realised that I am nothing compared to how huge everything is – I could have dropped into the vast blueness like a speck of dust, and disappeared - engulfed by the cold nothingness. Like tossing a small pebble into a lake. The water could swallow me, and it would be emotionless and indifferent. Sometimes knowing how fragile a life can be – makes a person more perceptive of life. It was this alluring and awe-inspiring view, which made me want to see more of the world.

I want to visit the places I have aspired to see – like Germany and Italy. I would also love to go to New Zealand, Japan and Switzerland. I would not mind becoming an astronaut, just to see Earth with its blue seas and swirling white clouds from above. I would love to marvel at the undiminished luminescence of moons, planets, constellations, nebulas, and galaxies away from city lights and neon glows. I believe that travelling around the world to admire places of beauty would instil a sense of calm and peace in me. Witnessing images of beauty and knowing they exist may be enough for some people, but not for me. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a thousand words are not enough for me. I favour actually being there, to feel the wind and hear the sounds, even if I have to hike up a mountain to get to where I want to be. I want to feel like I am taking an enchanting journey – like the protagonist of fairy tales – to search for the most beautiful place in the world. The photographs would detail my epic journey, and become chapters to my story.

I realise that people in different places, have different views of beauty. So the ‘most beautiful place’ that I may find, would be the greatest and ultimate example of charm. A place with artless, sweet sounding background music where everything exists in harmony. A place that would touch the soul of any person, no matter their race or background. A place whose magnificence stupefies the most talkative of person into a reverent silence. A place unburdened of any labelled spiritual or holy significance. I believe a site like this cannot be a place, with any man made structure in it.

I wish to astonish the world with the myriad beauty our world can take, and I want to do this by capturing a moment in time of picturesque places. I want to inspire in others to have an appreciation for our world, and to give me a purpose and direction in my life. I want to share the visions of splendour and peace with other people. I understand that many people, in one way or another would or can not bring themselves to go out and see how exquisite a world we live in. There are too many things to do, they have no money, no time or have a responsibility they can not leave - but if I can capture some beauty and bring it to their lives, they would be able to cherish it from afar . I have a visualisation where the photographs I could take, being printed into big posters and displayed to busy metropolitan cities, where even busy businesspeople would stop on the streets to appreciate the beauty which exists on our planet. I want people to stop and think, about the world outside of their cities and realise that there are resplendent things in life.

Poets and artists would want to travel with me, so I can show them the things I have seen. They would use their own mediums in transferring the images of beauty, to their audience – the people of the world. I can imagine their paintings decorating museums or bringing light into busy offices, or the poems adorning anthologies being read by students travelling to school on a train. Perhaps, I may even encourage a new generation of photographers. With all the gizmos and gadgets around the place nowadays, such as computer games and the Internet – people have almost lost the ability to feel wonderment. Few people are fascinated enough to go out and see a sunrise, they would much rather watch television. The types of castles the younger generation frequently sees are those from computer-generated images in 3 dimensional games. It would be great if a child or teenager would look upon a castle from an image, have the desire to see and explore one for themselves and actually be able to do so.

Imagine a graceful white, mountain castle with blue roofs. Trees coloured with the changing leaves of autumn surround it, with the gentle early morning mist caressing its tall, elegant spires. Castles are associated with medieval times, especially with magical tales, and this image connotes that mystical, marvellous things may happen and increases the awe felt by the viewer – especially when they know that such a place does exist.

Therefore, there is nothing more I would love to do than to travel the world and share it with other people. I like people to appreciate the land by seeing how truly breath-takingly beautiful it is, and keep it from being harmed.
