My Dream
A Writing Competition For High School Students

Countless generations of people have tried desperately to achieve their one goal; their dream. The question I want to ask is why? Don’t we all succumb to one fate? So why even try to achieve anything in this world when we all know that when our time comes we all go down the same road.

This question has played in my mind ever since I could think of what we do and why we do it. So far only one answer has come to mind.

All the great achievers in our time, the people that changed the world we live in forever, all had one thing in common. They all had the same eagerness to change the world for the better, or for the worse.

Think about it for a second. Martin Luther King’s dream was for everybody to have equal rights, no matter if they have a different religion, are a different colour or come for a different country. He didn’t do this to become rich or famous; he did this because he wanted to change the world, not just for himself but for every human being on the planet.

That is why I also want to change the world. I know that millions upon millions of people have tried before me and failed but I don’t care if nobody remembers my name, as long as I do something with the life that I’m so lucky to have.

Then again you may be thinking, what’s the point of wasting your whole life changing the world when you can just mind your own business and let things be the way they are.

I have only one response to this.

When people stop thinking of just themselves and start caring about their world you will see that everything that has plagued mankind for centuries will disappear.

I’m not going to lie to myself or anyone else by saying that I’m going to accomplish this dream, who knows maybe it will never come true and mankind will eventually destroy itself. Nobody knows what is going to happen in the future all they can do is try to make sure that they have the best possible chance at preventing the worst things to happen.

To try to accomplish my dream I need a position that I have some power in law and power in influencing the way people think. That is why I’ve decided to have a career in politics.

When I become a politician I’m going to change a lot of things, for instance, I believe that criminals get off too lightly when it comes to punishing them. Can you believe that someone can murder you and only get twenty years? I believe that if you kill a man you should spend the rest of your life in prison. I know that some people wouldn’t agree with me but I also know that the majority of Australia feels exactly the same way I feel. Another change that I make is to take better care of the environment, we are destroying our ecosystem in such a way that soon more and more animals are going to become extinct and before you know it our whole environment will get destroyed.

I also know for a fact that some politicians are corrupt and I know that when I fulfil half of my dream by becoming a politician that I would make sure that I don’t become one of those people. I’m saying this because I believe that when you’re a politician people trust you and respect you, but when you break this respect they hate and despise you.

The things that I have mentioned above are but a trifle of what I dream of doing in the future. My actual dream is for everybody to live in harmony. There is so many things that we can do and discover. The possibilities are endless if the whole world unites. We could discover cures for every single disease, we could abolish hunger and poverty, there are just so many things that we could do if we all joined together.

Of course like I said earlier my dream will probably never come true but I’m going to do everything that is humanly possible to try to make it come true. I know that even if I start to make it happen that it would probably take centuries for the whole world to change and only my descendents will live in my dream, but if I don’t start it who will?

Hopefully, by the time I’m old enough to enter politics things would have changed for the better and there would be more people like me that want to change  the world.

It’s going to be a long, hard journey to become a politician who is loved by all but its going to be even harder to change the world. That’s why I know for sure that I can’t possibly achieve what I want to achieve by myself and that I’m going to need help from everybody in the world.

In conclusion, a dream isn’t something that we want to do if we get the chance to or something that we always dismiss be saying I’ll do that tomorrow. A dream is what keeps us alive, without a dream what would we be? We need dreams to survive and to strive to. Even little children have dreams of becoming astronauts or presidents. Of course our dreams get more realistic as we age, but nevertheless we all need that reassurance that we aren’t living our lives just for the sake of it but we’re alive because we are going to do something with it. I just hope that my dream will someday, eventually come true.
