My Dream
A Writing Competition For High School Students
in the Fairfield and Liverpool Area, Sydney, Australia

Kieu Diem Vu Nguyen - Consolation Prize

Looking back to those childhood days not only would we be able to recall those playground games and nap time but we would also be able to see ourselves dreaming of our future careers. Little boys would have dreamed to become firemen and having the opportunity to slide down those poles and showing their bravery as they would courageously save people trapped within burning buildings. Little girls would have dreamed to become nurses so that they could take care of the patients and walk around with in the uniform which had a first aid cross on it. Dreams within our childhood were when our imagination was to run free and we would dream to have professions to make us happy and life enjoyable.

Looking to present day the dreams of many have changed, we now see ourselves as business peoples, stock market investors, factory workers, shop keepers…either way the path we dreamed of has been swept away and genuine happiness is not seen to be a concerning factor. The reason behind this unexpected transference is the truth of reality.

Reality of human kind is just simply stating that life is to be conducted entirely through self interest and indulgence; therefore there is a major concern in money .The world we live in today values money as an essential factor. Nowadays the essential needs for life are not only water, food, shelter and clothing but also money. Money not only determines our economic status but determines how successful we are in life, whether we are on a low income budget or being wealthy. Money controls us, as well as our daily lives. The use of money enables us to purchase gifts, this having the ability to bring a smile to any ones face. Money determines our health status, whether we can afford the medication or treatments needed. It decides for us our companions in life and our personal ability to compete with normal day society in its upgrading of advancement of technology. Materialistic products are what have also influenced our lives. The need for new flat screen televisions, stylish seasonal fashions and designer furniture is all motivated by the self indulgence of human kind and these luxury items can only be provided by money.

Therefore it is this economic concern within reality which has withdrawn our dreams or inner happiness and replaced it with visions of being wealthy, making money and in possession of materialistic goods.

In our society we have all grown to realize the importance of money. Even at a young age we have been exposed to the importance of materialistic possession and this being highly evident in the fairy tale of Aladdin and the genie, the emphasis upon the physical economic value of a person and how we are all judging others and being judged ourselves. We feel that without money we will not survive. In context that we may not be able to live up to the standards of society, we will not associate in with society and its emphasis for fast cars, expensive furniture, fashionable clothing, advanced electrical products and cash on it’s on. Life is not worth living if we were not accepted by others because without acceptance we are not happy or satisfied.

Our dreams today are being entirely influenced by money and its beneficial affects which we will be able to experience. No longer do we dream of such charitable acts to help other’s and offering our Christmas dinners to the little beggar boy down the road but rather in winning the lottery to help ourselves by purchasing a new vehicle and enjoying a summer vacation. No longer do we dream of walking around in green grass meadows with yellow daisies feeling the warmth of the radiant sun against and our backs and listening to hippie music but instead we dream of walking into a our bedrooms and then opening our wallets and drawers only to realize that it bursts out and overflows with cash, then seeing ourselves lying on mounds of money, surrounded, and feeling the coldness of gold nuggets grasped tightly in our palms.

No longer do students dream of having successful relationships with their boyfriends and girlfriends and finding their soul mates but instead students dream of receiving commendable HSC results, all in order to be accepted into a university course which will ensure them a successful career which has a high income.

Within reality we are able to observe that society today highly values the importance of money and has been manipulated by its ability. The values of love, life, family and religion have been lost and forgotten and replaced with the dollar signs of $MONEY$. All society’s members work towards personal gain on the basis of money and it has gained control over our lives. It is just within the human consciousness to distinctly feel greed and be tempted by desire and indulgence. Therefore many dreams of our child hood have no relevance nowadays and have washed away because of our visions today consisting of wealth and success, all drawn in accordance with money.

No longer will we dream of becoming that little fairy princess or that knight in shinning armour, no more shall our dreams of being a magician and acrobat exist because the thresholds of reality have taken us by our wallets and have taken away our childhood dreams.

Therefore reality is a lifetime struggle between living under the demands of society, to conform to its emphasis of money and materialism but also to be able to experience genuine happiness by following the pathways of your dreams.
