My Dream
A Writing Competition For High School Students
in the Fairfield and Liverpool Area, Sydney, Australia

In this cold and isolated world, people treat each other warily.  We do not know whom we can trust.  We do not know whom we can depend on.  We are afraid.  We do not know what to expect from people.  We are scared of confronting in someone who might seem nice but underneath the horrible disguise; it is just someone who wants to hurt us.  Someone plotting evil plans against us.  It makes me feel spiritless, lonesome and disappointed that our society can cause these concepts to enter our minds.  It just shows that even if we wish as hard as we can, we will never live in a warm and friendly world of no one will cooperate.

On a cold winter’s night, with nothing to do, I feel asleep in my bed while reading an ordinary storybook.  Maybe it was just the atmosphere that I was surrounded by or the book that I was reading but I dreamt of a magical dream.  It was like as if it was sending me a message.  And I lived to tell the story of my dream.

Walking down a deserted road with nothing in sight, I felt a cold breeze blowing on my body.  I turned around to look at what was blowing at me.  As I turned, an angel magically appeared in front of me.  She spread her wings delicately as she stood on a cloud.  She carried a wand decorated beautifully with nothing out of place.  Her hair was golden and shiny.  Even her sweet voice sounded like honey syrup when she asked me a question;

“What, if you had the powers to, dream of changing in this world?”

The question hit me by surprise that it took me a while to recover.  The question got me thinking.  Thinking about myself, the society, the world.  There would be a lot that I would dream of changing to make this world a better place.

Discrimination is a big issue that has every corner of the world covered.  Some people are racist to those who have a different religion or a different colour skin.  Two hundred years back, when European settlers arrived in Australia, they did not treat the Aborigines fairly.  Fifty years later, the Europeans’ attitude toward the Aborigines changed slightly but ti was not until thirty years ago that they were able to gain back the rights that were taken away from them one hundred and seventy years before.

Half across the globe in America, the “white” Americans did not treat the “black” American equally.  There were special rules that the Blacks had to follow while the Whites were free to roam the streets.  Abraham Lincoln, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. all had one thing in common; they wanted the Blacks and White to treat each other like brothers.  But it is not until now that the Blacks and Whites are more like brothers than ever before.

As each generation come and go, the numbers of racists have decrease.  However, there are still some people out there who are still racists.  Hopefully, as more generations come and go, the numbers of racists will decline until the word race or racist is deleted from this world.

Another issue in this world that I dream of changing is third-world countries.  Countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia do not have enough food to eat to sustain life.  Those who are “rich” in those countries can afford to buy food and are always first in line for any kind of supplies or hand outs, either luxury for themselves or for other who are as fortunate as them.  Those who are less fortunate are stuck with what is left on the ground for them to eat.  Some who cannot find food has to eat bugs and rats, which carry diseases.  However, if they do not ear, they will dies of starvation.

There is also no clean water.  The water supplies that are available cannot support everyone.  The people hardly take bath let alone have enough water to drink.  Those who live near rivers drink water from them, which can be polluted by chemicals and bacteria.  Drinking polluted water causes diseases that will eventually spread all over the body.

Medical treatment is also poor.  Diseases can be caught easily but unable to be cured if there is no treatment available.  Thousands, even millions die each year of disease and cancer.

If I could, I would dream of changing third-world countries into second or first world countries like Australia or America.  This would allow everyone to have the same advantages over food, clan water, medical treatment and more.

Crime is found everywhere on Earth.  Crime, which means something done against the law, is taken seriously around the world.  Stealing, physical and verbal abuses are some examples of crimes.  Although no one likes it, crime is committed every second every day in this world.  In Australia, some punishments for crimes may differ from other places in the world because each crime committed has a different weight.

Many people are affected by these terrible crimes.  People who commit crimes do not think about other people’s feelings.  They do it for their own pleasure and benefits.  It is cruel how these things occur.  No one should suffer against his or her lost.  Those who commit crime are heartless and should be stopped.  Conflict occurred when control is let loose.

Crime itself should be illegal.  People who think about harming people are horrible. This world would definitely be better without them.

If I could, I would erase all the “bad guys” from this world and take them to another planet where they would have nothing to do.  And back on Earth, everything would be calm and peaceful.

Peace, on the other hand, is the most important thing in the world.  It affects everyone no matter how you far you try to run away from it.  Conflict occurs when people do no have peace.  Many soldiers fought in terrible wars just so that their countries could be free.  War start just because countries either want to gain possessions or power over other countries.  If we learn to forgive, forget and learn to survive with the circumstances, there would be no out cries.  Peace will be on earth.  We can learn this by studying the great Confucius’ teachings and laws to have a good and happy life.

And as if the angel would read my mind, she said patiently:

“It takes time for everything to change.  It might not happen in a second, a day or a year but eventually, if everyone co-operates, things will be better and maybe, it will turn out better than what we expect.”

So I guess that nothing is perfect.  We all have to live with what we got; will all our love ones, families and friends.
