My Dream
A Writing Competition For High School Students
in the Fairfield and Liverpool Area, Sydney, Australia

Vinh An Ngoc - Consolation Prize

To me the word dream means your ambition for life, what occupation you want to do when you finish college. It also means something that you want to happen but is too good to be true such as riches ,fame and fantasies. Although some people’s dreams come true, most people’s dreams are just things that a person hopes would happen but never does.

My dream is to be a writer and hasn’t changed since I was in Year 2.It all started in year 2 with our teacher Mr. Slyney .He was really keen on story writing and had a “story time” everyday. During this time he would read us a few chapters of a book, which was usually Goosebumps, Wicked or Fear Street, and then give us some time to write our own stories. When we finished he would mark it and give us all a sticker. At that time everyone in my class including myself wanted to be a storywriter. But along the years, many things came and went and most of my friends didn’t want to be a writer anymore. Now most of my friends want to be computer programmers and technicians but I still want to be an writer. I felt that no matter what, I would still want to be writer.

I have also decided to take a different approach to this competition by writing a small part of a story I wrote for the competition (This is all I wrote, I haven’t continued it yet) .Being that I only had a little over a week to do it, it isn’t the best I can I do but is the best I can do in such a short amount of time.

 IN THE FUTURE!

 Deet-Deet!Deet-Deet!

The alarm was like a jackhammer to my head. I groaned and felt for the snooze button but nothing was there. My hands felt thin air.

No alarm clock? No bedside table?

I opened my eyes .Ahh! A streak of light struck my eyes. My eyes closed on reflex. I was blinded for a few seconds.

I slowly opened my eyes again .I was still gazed but at least I could see again.

 Deet-Deet!Deet-Deet!

Argh! Where was that annoying alarm clock? I looked around and…..

My heart stopped.

I was staring at a large rectangular display panel. It was like those new plasma screens but instead of being stuck to the wall it seemed to be part of the wall itself.

I cautiously walked to it, not knowing what to do. I studied the Large Display panel. It read “7:53am” in large bold flashing Letters.

On the bottom there was a smaller rectangular display panel with buttons on the screen .I had seen these before at the local electronics store. They were a new technology called touch screens. I read the buttons the aloud to myself.”Window, Door, Lights, Time, ,Central Control, and Other.

I turned around and surveyed my …room. Or at least what I thought was my room. The room was nearly empty apart from a large coffin like object which I assumed was my bed, a kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave etc., a worktable, a chair and couch. The walls were a dull metallic colour. The floor was covered by thin pale blue coloured carpet. There was also a small walled off area which I assumed was the toilet and shower.

I surveyed the room again and realized that this wasn’t my room! Not even close!

I started to panic .Before I had been too engrossed in the display panel to think about where I was. A wave of panic suddenly hit me!  My head was flooded by questions. Where was 1? How did I get here? Where are my parents? Am I dreaming or is this real? How do I get out of here? My head was about to bust. My brain was going to overload.

I couldn’t think! All I could think of was to get out of this place…this cell.

I searched the room for a way out. There! I raced to a large black panel in the wall. A door! Had to be!

I tried to open it but I couldn’t. It had no handle, no lever, no nothing! I pounded the door in frustration but nothing happened.

Then I noticed a small black screen on the door with the faint outline of a hand.

I had seen this thing in movies. You put your hand on them and it automatically reads your finger prints.

I hurriedly pressed my hand against the screen and waited. Nothing happened! Suddenly a voice boomed from somewhere above my head.

“ACESS DENIED! YOU ARE NOT READY TO GO TO WORK!” said a metallic computer voice.

Work? When did I go to work? I’m only 13.

I pressed my hand against the screen again but the same thing happened again.

ARGH! Why doesn’t it let me out!

I lost my temper and pounded the door with my clenched fists.

That was when I noticed that my fist didn’t exactly look like they did yesterday.

I stopped pounding the door and studied my fist.

It was big, rough and had veins that pumped across my muscular forearm.

My heart stopped while my brain tried to process the information.

That…that hand was a hand of a full grown man.

As soon as the information got through my head, my heart started pumping again, but at an record breaking speed. It sent me into frenzy. I searched the polished steel door for a reflection, a reflection of the 13 year old me, the one I saw everyday before I went to school. I searched and searched for a reflection. Finally, there!

I saw my black eyes, my short black hair, my oval shaped face my…

My day old beard, my muscular 6 foot frame…

The James staring back at me was an adult! Not old old but at least 10 years older than the boy I had been the night before.

My head was going to explode, my heart was beating at a million times per second!

I raked my brain for a sane explanation but found nothing! Maybe I was insane?

I studied my reflection again and noticed that I was wearing weird plain blue pyjamas.with white socks. Not my style! Nowhere near what I would to wear.

Suddenly there was a loud sound. ”BEEP-BEEP!” I jerked my head in the direction of the sound and found myself staring at the display panel. There words were flashing on the screen. It said “Hurry up! Work is starting in 10 minutes!” There were a few options on the touch screen. I read them out to myself.” view daily procedure, view schedule and quit. I pressed daily procedure and the 3 options were replaced 2 new ones. Automatic and Manual. I had no idea what it meant so I just pressed automatic.

That was when the horror began!

Suddenly I heard the humming of a machine.

The floor I was standing on suddenly opened beneath me. Ahh! I closed my eyes and braced myself for the fall. But nothing happened. I felt a piece of metal slide under my foot..

I opened my eyes and found myself moving…moving towards the sink?.

I was frozen in shock. How am I moving forward without moving my legs. I looked at my legs and saw…saw the floor moving?

What? Floors don’t move! Not in my century at least.

I rubbed my eyes to make sure I was seeing correctly.

Yes I’m. I must be really going insane!

I closed my eyes and tried to clear my mind .Tried to just simply forget about everything, tried to make myself sane again.

Suddenly there was a loud sound. BEEP! It brought me back to my senses. I had been so engrossed in talking to myself that I just forgot about the outside world.

I opened my eyes and found myself facing a steel cupboard.

A voice boomed from above, FINAL STOP: PROTECTIVE CLOTHING. Please step inside the circle. I stepped inside the small circle. Automatic or manual, asked a metallic computer voice. Urrr…manual. I had no idea what would happen if I had said automatic. The computer might accidentally choke me and anyway I’m still capable of dressing myself. The cupboard door opened to reveal a light blue jumpsuit,a sleek light blue helmet and a belt. After a lot of putting on and off, I finally managed to put my jumpsuit on properly. Phew! One down two to go!

Now I had to figure out to put on a helmet .It was surprisingly easy. I press a button on the side and it opened up like a normal bicycle helmet. I put it on my head and pressed the button. The window closed over my face blocking my source of air. Ahh! I couldn’t breathe! I clawed my hemet for the release button but couldn’t find it.Suddenly there was a sound and oxygen started filling up my helmet.AHH!I  could breathe again.

Next was  the belt which was exactly like a normal belt. Not hard at all

Feeling more confident in my new jumpsuit, I strolled to the door and placed my hand on the display panel.

 ACESS ALLOWED! PLEASE PROCEED!

The steel door opened to reveal a long corridor with many doors like mine leading what I presume are other people’s rooms. I strolled confidently down the corridor when …Bang!

I slamed head on into person who was just leaving his room. I staggered backwards. ”Sorry”I said with a small grin.Didn’t see where I was going!”

Bang! He punched my helmet straight on knocking me to the ground. Suddenly blackness engulfed my eyes until I could see nothing. The last thing I felt was someone holding my feet together and pulling me somewhere. Before I flew off the face of the earth, I heard a distant voice saying” We should through him in the trash.
