My Dream
A Writing Competition For High School Students

For years you anticipate that day when you fulfil your dream. You heart aches each day, yearning for its one desire. Its dream.

As you finally reach that milestone in your life, there’s no turning back. You’ve fulfilled your destiny. The exhilaration you feel as you complete what your heart has been striving for, is intense. BUT, there is one complication. Where do you go from there?

Everyone has a dream in life. What ever it may be. Your dream is what completes you.  Dreams are what create you happiness and joy. Dreams make life worth living. Dreams are what makes you, you.

Many children dream of becoming a doctor, a lawyer, or a scientist. Your dream may be to be the next world champion. The next Ian Thorpe, Grant Hackett or Cathy Freeman. Or you might want to be a pop star. Or a famous actor. Then there are those who are more extraordinary. They’re selfless and giving. Their dream is to have no poverty in the world, or justice for all, possibly even world peace. Or your dream may even be to find your one true love, your soul mate. All these are great dreams. Great ambitions to strive for. But these can be fulfilled. This is when you ask ‘ What happens next?’

They’ve completed their chosen destiny. They have nothing left. They have nowhere to go anymore. They have no ambitions left. After a dream has been entirely completed, than the person has past their peak in life. After that it’s all down hill.

Then there’s me. To others my dream may be strange nevertheless it is a dream. My dream never ends.

I use to think the world was perfect.

I use to think there was nothing I would change.

I was the type of person who thought the most terrible thing in the world was when I got a bad hair day.

My dream use to be to look like a supermodel. To have Lips like Angelina Jolie. Gorgeous hair like Nicole Kidman. The “perfect body”. I was just you typical teenage girl.

Then I realised that there was poverty in the world. That people suffered mental, physical and emotional suffering and pain each day.

I realised everybody didn’t have the life I have.

I realised I needed to so something about it.

My dream is to make a difference. No matter how small. No matter what it is. No matter how. I will make a difference. I already have. However, my dream wasn’t just to make one difference in life and stop.  It was, and is, to always try to make a difference in every aspect in life.

I know I have already made a difference. My being here in this world has made a difference. However small it may be, it is a difference.

If I wasn’t here, I don’t know how different the world might be, but I know life would be different. Without me, that’s one less person in the world. That’s three meals a day for a lifetime not eaten. That’s tonnes less rubbish created.  That’s one more family of three members and one less with four. And that’s one less friend people could’ve made.

My dream is to make a difference. If everyone made a slight difference than we would have a perfect world. Paradise. If each person on this Earth recycled one piece of paper a day, that’s thousands of trees being saved. If each person donated a dollar to third-world countries, than there would be no poverty. If each criminal in the world stopped breaking the law for a day, than our world would have no more crime. If each war fought was stopped, just for a moment, then we would have world peace. No matter how long it lasted for.  No matter how small you think you are in the world, you are apart of it. Without you, the world is not complete.

I’ve never made a big difference in the world, with hope, courage and perseverance, I know I can. I won’t ask for recognition. I won’t do it alone. Together the world can all help. We can all make a big difference if we work together.

Life is precious. It is what you make it. You should live it to the fullest. You should be happy. There’s no end to your desires. Your dreams.

The world may feel like it’s against you but that’s no reason to stop believing. People will expect you to be the best. It doesn’t mean you have to. It just means to try. People will expect you to do exactly what they want you to do. What you do, is not to listen to them. You do what you want. It’s your life, not theirs.

I dream to succeed, in what I want to do.

I dream to not only fulfil expectations, but to exceed them. Not the expectations of others, but what I expect of myself.

I dream to always trust myself.

I dream to always believe.

I dream to find good in everyone.

I dream to be perfect, but only to myself.

I dream not to criticise others or myself

I dream to live life to the fullest.

Above all, I dream to make a difference. No matter how small.

Dreams are always possible. Dreams are what you want them to be. Dreams are what complete you. You dream is what makes your life a Utopia.

You can make a difference. The only thing stopping you is yourself.

“One SONG can spark a moment
One FLOWER can wake the dream
One TREE can start a forest
One BIRD can herald spring
One SMILE begins a friendship
One HANDCLASP lifts a soul
One STAR can guide a ship at sea
One WORD can frame the goal
One VOTE can change a nation
One SUNBEAM lights a room
One CANDLE wipes out darkness
One LAUGH will conquer gloom
One STEP must start each journey
One WORD must start a prayer
One HOPE will raise our spirits
One TOUCH can show you care
One VOICE can speak with wisdom
One HEART can know what is true
One LIFE can make a difference.”
